CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary woman offers the ultimate gift to her colleague. On Monday, Connie Walker and Heather McCormick will travel to Edmonton for a liver transplant. By the end of 2018, McCormick was diagnosed with precancerous cells in her bile duct, which means that she would eventually need a liver transplant to survive.
It has been successful in Alberta's list of transplants, but has been considered a low priority because the list gives priority to those with declining health.
Rather than waiting for the cancer to develop, reducing her chances of survival, the mother of two young children decided to get around the list and appeal directly to the public for a living donor.
She did not know that her colleague Connie, whom she barely knew, would volunteer to test for compatibility.
She is. Several months later, Connie and Heather prepare for their surgery and convalescence that will last several months. The two women will have to relocate temporarily to Edmonton while they recover and the costs should be in the thousands.
Their colleague Michelle Hogobaum created two women's gofundme campaigns in hopes of offsetting the financial costs.
