Full federal approval of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine will allow businesses and universities to demand vaccinations and encourage hesitant Americans to get vaccinated, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said on Sunday.
“We already know that there are many companies and universities that have turned to vaccine requirements,” Murthy told CNN’s State of the Union. “And I think it’s a very reasonable thing to do to create a safe environment.”
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is trying to complete its approval process for the life-saving drug on Monday, The New York Times reported.
So far, the Pfizer shot has been administered under emergency use authorization, although experts continue to stress that it is safe and effective.
“We gave it to hundreds of millions of people,” Murthy said. “We have seen that he is doing his job. And that’s why we continue to recommend that people get vaccinated starting today and… as soon as they can. “
As the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus spreads, the United States is experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases. Many southern states are struggling for hospital capacity amid resistance from Republican leaders and the public to vaccinations and mask warrants.
The overwhelming majority of hospitalizations and deaths from Covid in the United States are in unvaccinated people.
