The Funeral Planning Committee has apologized to the government for the negative publicity leading up to the funeral of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

James Victor Gbeho, former Ambassador to the United Nations, apologized on behalf of the family during a courtesy visit to President Akufo-Addo.

The visit aimed to formally thank the government for ensuring that the first President of the Fourth Republic received a dignified funeral.

“We would like to ask you to forgive us for the kind of scene we have created throughout this funeral,” he told the president.

He added: “It is unfortunate that a few circumstances have arisen which have caused this kind of intransigence. However, now that we have put everything behind us, we will also try to achieve greater unity and harmony.

“It was a complete misunderstanding of what state funerals entailed,” he said.

However, President Akufo-Addo said for his part that he was neither upset nor worried about the issue.

“… I am not, in particular, upset or worried about what happened.”

He indicated his willingness to ensure unity between the families and also pledged his support to the family.

“I want to let you know that I continue to have a set of positive feelings towards him and his family,” assured the president.

According to him, “whatever needs to be done to ensure the safety of the family, I am ready to do my part”.
