The West Gomoa Security Council has revealed that a funeral service will be held next week Tuesday for 12 teenagers who were recovered after drowning on Apam Beach on Sunday evening.
“The bodies will be donated to individual families. We are not going to have a mass burial like we suggested earlier, ”Gomoa West District Chief Executive Bismark Baisie Nkum told Citi News.
According to the council, the event that was originally scheduled for today has been postponed to pave the way for certain rites to be performed by the community.
The drowning victims were between 13 and 18 years old.
Some reports say more than 20 teenagers drowned in the incident, but 12 bodies have recovered so far.
A preliminary police report said as the teens were swimming, a violent tidal wave engulfed them, leading to the tragedy on Sunday night.
A search team tried unsuccessfully to recover the bodies that evening.
The next morning, four of the teens’ lifeless bodies were found and more bodies were found during the day by fishermen assisting in the recovery efforts.
A total of 12 bodies were recovered; 10 males and 2 females.
Three of the victims who were recovered were receiving treatment at St Luke Catholic Hospital in Apam and assisting the police with their investigations.
The bodies of the deceased have not yet been returned to their families.
