Future State: Justice League # 1 assassinates and creates a more lethal Doom Legion after Jon Kent and his crew of heroes are duped by mysterious forces.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Justice League # 1, by Joshua Williamson, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Tom Napolitano, on sale now.

The DC Universe is proud that Secret Societies are thorns on the Justice League side. Most recently, the Legion of Doom aided Perpetua after being used by the Apex Predator, Lex Luthor, in preparation for Dark Nights: Death Metal, and they even appeared in the Harley quinn cartoon, trying to bring DC’s elite heroes to their knees.

With its leading role in the current DC Universe, it’s no surprise that the Legion of Doom continues to live on to fight a new generation of heroes in Future State: Justice League # 1. But even though they are powerful, this Legion of Doom doesn’t last long.

Future State Injustice League

In the Hall of Justice, TO Morrow is present with Despera (Despero’s daughter), Amaz-X (the new Amazo), the Flash Nemesis Cobalt Blue, the Screech Owl (who hates Batman), the enemy of Aquawoman, the Flood and the Wrath Ultraviolet Lantern. There’s also a decrepit old Brainiac, and while they boast themselves as an improved Doom Legion, they’re not all they think they are.

As Jon Kent’s Superman, Jo Mullein’s Green Lantern, the new heroes of Batman and the Future State of DC learn hours later, this legion has been slaughtered by an unknown force. Although Jo runs her forensics, she can’t tell who did it, not even with the help of others. Everyone brushes it more or less, but Jon knows something’s going on, because it would take some big hitters for such an effective kill. However, they don’t want to bond like a family to prevent themselves from making the mistakes of their predecessors, which leaves Jo to complete the analysis. Jon bonds with Yara Flor, the new Wonder Woman, hoping she can convince them to unite in the right way.

But soon enough, these villains strike again, as they turn out to be the White Martian Hyperclan.

Hyperclan Future State Justice League

A version of Jon and Yara incapacitate Aquawoman and The Flash on their secret pseudo-date, while the lookalikes ambush the rest of the League. They are all thrown into a mysterious prison with the evil league returning to the abandoned courthouse. In the end, the TO Morrow crew triggered the shape-shifting Hyperlan to pretend to be the League, but Protex, the leader, had bigger ideas that didn’t involve anyone controlling them. He led the assault, killing the bad guys, before assuming the identity of the League.

The powers of the Hyeprclan only grew over time, as they were even able to deceive Jo, whose equipment showed the Martian to have Jon’s DNA. And now that the White Martians have trapped the League in their old prison, the Hyeprclan will do everything in their power to tarnish the Justice League’s image by doing more than just killing bad guys in a dilapidated building.
