Argentine President Mauricio Macri has signed a decree making Friday a national holiday in the country while officials in Buenos Aires have strengthened security before the G20 summit, which begins Friday.

The world's most powerful leaders arrived or went to Buenos Aires on Thursday, where much of the capital was closed for meetings.

The Argentine government has urged anyone in Buenos Aires who does not participate in the G20 to leave the city if possible.

"Our recommendation is to use the long weekend to escape," said Patricia Bullrich, Argentina's security minister, according to Reuters. "Take off after work Thursday because the city will be very difficult, our security measures will be very strict and the decisions we will take in case of violence will be immediate."

The planned security measures are very extensive: public transport is stopped, flights are diverted and a considerable safety device is in place for any event likely to break the G20.
