The issue of illegal mining popularly known as galamsey in our local parlance has become quite worrying as the activity pollutes water bodies and depletes green vegetation.

Most of the people who engage in this activity end up losing their lives because the way they mine the precious ore is not correct.

Reading news YEN.com.gh says two illegal miners died in a Galamsey pit after a hill near a Galamsey site collapsed on top of them.

The incident occurred in Wassa Adiembra in the Amenfi East municipality of the Western Region on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

The two have been identified as Kofi China, 30, and Gyakut, 26.

The Joy News report states that another person was also seriously injured as a result of the unfortunate incident.

The injured victim has been identified as Yenu Kwaw, 26. Yaw unfortunately had all of his legs broken when he was rescued.

According to the report, the three victims were on their routine galamsey expedition by the time the hill had developed some cracks.

Eyewitnesses at the crash scene said the victims were under the rubble for more than two hours before being rescued.

NADMO Nana Kumi’s Wassa Amenfi East City Manager advised galamseyers to be safety conscious in trying to make a living from galamsey activities.

In addition, 16 people were killed in an accident in Akyem Asafo on the Accra-Kumasi highway. Several others were reported to have suffered injuries to varying degrees.

The recorded death came from the two buses, 13 men and 3 women having died on the spot.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Friday February 26, after the head-on collision of two large KIA buses.
