Galamsey communities in the Eastern Region have offered additional livelihoods

Akwatia (E / R), April 13, GNA – Six hundred
thousand oil palm seedlings must be provided to farmers for planting, this
season, in three areas of the Eastern Region noted for illegal mining
Activities.

They are Akwatia, Awhenease and New Abirem.

This is part of the government's plan to
provide alternative livelihoods to mining communities.

Mr. Steven Agbo, the main community
Relationship Officer with the Minerals Commission, explained that the program was
to help the mining communities improve their livelihoods, which
started in the Western Region in 2007.

He said in addition to providing farmers
seedlings, they would also receive a wire mesh to protect the seedlings
be destroyed by rodents.

Each registered farmer would receive 150 ¢ GH ¢
for clearing and 115 ¢ GH for the maintenance of each acre of land
grown, in one year, in addition to receiving fertilizer and
agricultural extension services.

The Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III,
told farmers that it was an opportunity for life, which must be taken seriously
improve the income of farmers and the economy as a whole.

Up to now, about 100 farmers have enrolled in
the area of ​​Akwatia.
