An unspecified number of illegal miners (galamseyers) were reportedly trapped in a galamsey grave that collapsed Thursday morning in Akrokeri near Obuasi in the northern Adansi district of Ashanti region.

According to the police, relief efforts are underway to rescue people who would look for gold despite the ban on illegal mining.

In an interview with Citi FM, based in Accra, and monitored by Adomonline.com, the Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, DSP Martin Asenso, said that an excavator was used to dig the cave to find the victims.

"At around 5 am on Thursday, local police learned that illegal miners were trapped in a" Galamsey "pit in Akrokeri. We arrived at the scene, which is supposed to be a public toilet in the commune that had collapsed.

"We are not able to determine the number of people underground. We have an excavator digging since morning and we have not seen any dead bodies or people alive.

"We are still investigating but, at the present time, no resident of the city has come to report the disappearance of a parent, so until we dig deep enough. we can not confirm that there is someone imprisoned underground, "he said.
