Gambian President Adama Barrow called for national unity Thursday in Banjul as the West African nation celebrated 56 years of citizenship since gaining independence from Britain in 1965.
“As always, I plead for national unity, reconciliation and tolerance. The true Gambian nature is marked by warmth, sympathy, generosity and a willingness to support each other. Let us apply these values wherever we are, ”he told the crowd gathered in the capital Banjul.
President Barrow said independence brought about political independence and national sovereignty as portrayed by the recognition, dignity, freedom and self-determination of a people.
“We must give new meaning to national independence through our relationships, our interactions and our service to the nation in the framework of good governance, rapid development and peaceful coexistence in a nation and a government for all citizens, ”he said.
Barrow called against the division based on partisan politics, ethnic differences, and called on his people to reject drugs and crime.
