In front of Game of thrones premiere of season eight, Joe Dempsie appeared on the scene of the BFI TV & Radio Times festival to discuss his role as Gendry in the HBO fantasy series. Demspie told movie fans BFI Imax of London that Gendry was not the star for whom he had auditioned in Game of thrones.
"I auditioned for three or four different parties before getting the role of Gendry," revealed the actor. Jamie East, who was hosting the event, then asked Dempsie what other roles he had played. Here is what Demspie replied:
"Jon Snow, at first, because when they were doing a casting for the pilot, I think every actor of a certain age, who was white, probably did it." And then, yes, that's right. 39; was about 18 months after they were sponsored for a full series.When I auditioned for Pip and Gren, Jon's pals at the Wall.I did not have any d & # 39; them. "
This rejection, of course, has entered Demspie's head. As the actor says:
"I was just thinking:" They are convinced that I am the worst actor on the planet, I do not know why. " And when I auditioned … my last audition, for Gendry, was potentially the worst audition of my life, because it was with [producer] Frank Doelger and [showrunners] David and Dan, and the other producers. And every time I finished reading the scene, there was like three seconds of silence. And then, Frank would say, "Yes, can we try that … one more time … uh … just a little worried that some Americans do not understand a word you say." Which was basically the code for: Frank Doelger could not understand a word I was saying. "
That made the audience laugh, and then Dempsie went on to tell his experiences as Gendry:
"And then, I just forgot him, and then when he [the part of Gendry] happened … it was season 1, it was a small part of a TV show that no one really knew anything about. Uh, so I did not have a clue [that Gendry would be a big deal]. Even though, at the end of the third season, when they announced that Gendry was going to disappear for a while, they said, "Look, the plan is to bring it back at some point."
Gendry came back Game of thrones the seventh season, of course, and will likely play an important role in the eighth season, whose first episode was aired on HBO last night.
The episode is now available in the UK for broadcast on Now TV. He will be back on Sky Atlantic at 9 pm tonight.
