Former Danquah Institute executive director Gabby Otchere-Darko said gay activities were already illegal in Ghana.
He said the new anti-gay bill that has been sent to parliament will only blacklist Ghana for promoting hatred.
“Gay + activities are already illegal in our country. But, we are not known to hate. The president has given his word that he will not legalize it.
“This bill serves only one purpose: to blacklist Ghana for promoting hatred!” Certainly, the promoters of the bill cannot say that they are not aware, ”the leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) said in a tweet.
Ningo Prampram lawmaker Samuel Nartey George and other lawmakers are sponsoring an anti-LGBT + bill in Parliament.
Parts of the bill read as follows: “A person who, through a medium, a technology platform, a technology account or any other means, produces, procures, markets, disseminates, broadcasts, publishes or distributes material for the purpose of promoting an activity prohibited under the bill, or a person uses any electronic device, the Internet service, a film or any other device capable of electronic storage or transmission to produce, to procure, market, broadcast, broadcast, publish or distribute any material for the purpose of promoting an activity prohibited under the bill commits an offense and is liable, on summary conviction, to imprisonment for not less than five years and not more than ten years.
Sam George is receiving criticism from some quarters for sponsoring the anti-LGBT + program.
For example, Ghanaian musician Sister Derby, who is also a well-known LGBT + rights lawyer in Ghana, “is obsessed with the sexual orientation of people” and called him a pervert and backward thinker.
But he said he was open to intellectual debate on the anti-LGBT + bill that he and some of his fellow lawmakers are sponsoring.
Speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Friday, July 23, he said emotional outbursts have no place in the law.
“We are open to intellectual criticism or to criticism and suggestions based on law. Emotional outbursts, emotional comments have no place in legislation.
“If anyone has any intellectual suggestions or additions, we are ready to debate the matter.”
