Gelson Martins has joined AS Monaco for a loan contract one season after refusing to come talk to Newcastle United.
The Magpies have submitted a loan offer for former Lisbon Sporting winger Monday to Atletico Madrid which has been accepted by La Liga, but after being asked to speak at the club and go to the St James' Park, Martins has chosen to join the Ligue 1 club until the end of the season.
Martins finished his move to Monaco and said after signing: "I am very happy to arrive at AS Monaco.
"I look forward to returning to the field with my new teammates and doing my best to help the team."
Vice President of Monaco, Vadim Vasilyev, added: "Gelson is an offensive midfielder who has shown great things in the Sporting jersey and who will be able to bring to the team all his speed and offensive capabilities. "
Newcastle remains in talks with Monaco for Italian defender Antonio Barreca, but reports that the Magpies are interested in Antonio Valenica of Manchester United have been rejected by United sources.
Rafa Benitez was asked if he thought Newcastle would succeed in recent days with new faces. He replied, "I have no idea."
