PRETORIA – Gemfields, a JSE registered ruby mining company, has agreed to pay R 126 million in compensation for the murder, beatings and serious fires at its mine in northeastern Ontario. Mozambique.
The payment was ordered by the High Court of London.
Gemfields makes the payment after the mediation without admission of liability.
He admits that acts of violence occurred at his Montepuez mine in Cabo Delgado province, but states that the company is not responsible for it.
The case, in the province where Islamist militants have killed hundreds of people in recent attacks, involves 18 murders committed by the mine safety and Mozambican police and beatings which in some cases prevented the victims from returning to work.
An independence grievance committee has been established to settle new claims.
