German Health Minister Jens Spahn said he would seek to ban "conversion therapies" that claim to alter badual orientation. "Homobaduality is not a disease, that's why it does not need to be treated," said Spahn, a homobadual himself, to the Berlin-based leftist daily newspaper Die Tageszeitung.
He hopes that a German law banning such treatments can be pbaded by the summer.
Conversion therapy – sometimes referred to as "curative" therapy, restorative therapy, ex-gay therapy, or badual orientation change efforts – refers to any treatment aimed at changing a person's badual orientation or eliminating their gender identity. They spread across the United States and were used against their will by parents of gay or transgender teens.
Most of these practices depend on conversation therapy, but some techniques involve high dose injections of testosterone, electric shocks and other treatments.
"I do not believe in these therapies, mainly because of my homobaduality," said Spahn, who represents the right wing of the conservative CDU party of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The Minister of Health is counting on the support of his colleagues if a vote is necessary. "I can not imagine that there is a supporter of conversion therapies in my parliamentary group," he said.
In the European Union, only Malta and some Spanish regions have totally banned this practice. In March 2018, a large majority of Members of the European Parliament nevertheless adopted a non-binding text inviting Member States to ban them.
