Germany has canceled support for Uganda every year following a 2018 report by the United Nations that millions of dollars in funds used to help resettle refugees in Kampala have been stolen .
The German decision to retain $ 106 million a year follows a similar decision by the United Kingdom last year that it suspends funding for Uganda following the UN report, reported the East African.
The discovery of theft was revealed when a whistleblower in the Ugandan government informed the donors that large sums of money had been withdrawn from the account on which it had been deposited.
This led to a joint investigation by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), the United Nations and the Ugandan government, which revealed that the number of refugees in Uganda had been inflated while resources for refugees were missing.
But Germany's late decision more than a year after the discovery of missing funds is a testament to the frustration over Kampala's slowness in translating the culprits, prompting donors to question his commitment to investigate the matter.
This is bad news for the 1.3 million refugees in Uganda, mostly from Southern Sudan. In 2017, the country received $ 350 from donors, whose main benefactors were the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and Germany.
Bonn says the funds will be withheld until an investigation into this issue is opened by Kampala.
