The German government is giving Ghana some 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to help with the national pandemic vaccination campaign.
The donation is part of Germany’s pledge to make up to 70 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine available to African countries this year to help the continent vaccinate its 1.3 billion people.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel made the pledge last Friday after a summit with African leaders on the G20 Compact with Africa Initiative held last week.
“As we speak, President Akufo-Addo has sent a plane to Germany to take delivery of the 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine,” said Eugene Arhin, director of communications at the presidency, when he briefed the presidential press corps at Jubilee House on Monday in Accra.
The briefing focused on the president’s seven-day working visit to Germany, starting Sunday, August 22, at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Germany’s contribution is in addition to the 1.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine that the US government has donated to Ghana to fulfill the government’s quest to have at least 20 million of the adult population vaccinated here. the end of the year.
“At this particular stage, I think it is a good initiative that has been undertaken by the government of President Akufo-Addo… Slowly but surely – I believe we are on the right track to fulfill this commitment. So 1.5 million doses of vaccine from Germany are on their way to Ghana, ”said Arhin.
He said President Akufo-Addo had held bilateral talks with his German counterpart on strengthening relations, vaccines, acquiring naval patrol vessels for the Ghanaian Navy, among others.
The president also participated in the G20 Pact for Africa, initiated under the German presidency to promote private investment in Africa, including in infrastructure, where he made it clear that the Pact initiative had a considerable impact. on Ghana’s ambition to become an investment hub in Africa, with automotive and industry giants camping out in the country.
He delivered a speech in Düsseldorf, Germany on Monday, August 23, as part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s first industrial region and most populous state.
Addressing the assembly, which included Chancellor Merkel and Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet, President Akufo-Addo said Ghana was determined to participate fully in the global market as a exporter of manufactured products and not of raw materials.
President Akufo-Addo added that the country was inspired by the successes of North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany because, “likewise, we want to build a progressive and prosperous country”.
He said that as Germany is a major exporter of industrial products and technology, led by North Rhine-Westphalia, Ghana’s relationship with Germany is of the utmost importance and must be based on this.
“The recent establishment of a Volkswagen assembly plant in Accra is a welcome development, and we are encouraged that more and more German companies have expressed their willingness to locate in Ghana”, a- he declared.
