Germany investigates email threats of neo-Nazis

German prosecutors are investigating more than 100 threatening emails sent to politicians, lawyers, a pop singer and others, apparently neo-Nazis.

Anonymous emails are signed "National Socialist Offensive", "NSU 2.0" or "Wehrmacht" – suggesting that one or more neo-Nazis have sent them.

Left-wing MP Martina Renner and pop singer Helene Fischer were targeted.

The language of emails is similar. Some were bomb threats, which prompted the police to search two cities.

The threats resulted in evacuations from Lübeck's main train station on Monday and Gelsenkirchen's public finance offices on Tuesday, but no bombs were found, the German press reported.

Last September, Helene Fischer condemned the far-right hate speech during a concert in Chemnitz, shortly after far-right groups marched through the eastern city. and clashed with the police.

The German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung announced that Martina Renner, a member of the left-wing party Die Linke, received a threatening letter and "street executions" email on Tuesday, bearing the signature "National Socialist offensive". ".

National Socialism was the ideology of Adolf Hitler, whose army during the Second World War called it the Wehrmacht. "NSU 2.0" refers to the outlawed nationalist neo-Nazi terrorist group found guilty of committing 10 racially motivated killings.

The only surviving member of a NSU cell, Beate Zschäpe, was found guilty in this murder case last July.

Many of the threatening e-mails have apparently been posted in Berlin. The investigation is therefore conducted by the Berlin prosecutors.

Threats of violence may be prosecuted under anti-incitement, blackmail or peace-related laws.

Among the people who received bomb threats were the Central Council of Jews of Germany, the high courts of Bamberg and Munich, the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office and the Hamburg Airport.
