Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Honorable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey (MP), on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hungary on Cooperation in the field of water management, committing to work towards the establishment of a framework for a fast and harmonious cooperation between the parties on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefits.

The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday 22 January 2019 in Brussels, Belgium, on the sidelines of the first annual ministerial meeting between the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) which has just completed.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, has signed on behalf of his country his support for this agreement, in accordance with the national laws and regulations in force in both countries.

Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey also met with her counterparts from Malta and Portugal to explore opportunities for deepening bilateral relations between Ghana and the two countries. The EU-AU Ministerial Meeting, the first annual inter-summit forum, was an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the outcomes of the 5th AU-EU Summit in Abidjan in November 2017, marking a milestone in the restructuring of the partnership stronger, mutually beneficial, better adapted to a rapidly changing global context. The meeting brought together the EU foreign ministers and their counterparts from more than fifty states in the African region, including Ghana, Togo, Liberia, Senegal and Niger. Participants deliberated on peace, security and governance, trade, investment and economic integration, as well as multilateralism, as the best recipe for deeper cooperation.

To consolidate this agreement, the meeting adopted a communiqué in which members confirmed their common desire to build partnerships and move towards an even stronger, deeper and more political partnership and friendship between the two continents.

It was co-chaired by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Richard Sezibera.
