The subcontracted workers of Ghana's bauxite company in Awaso, Western Region, hit hard on the company's management for what they described as unfair wage conditions they suffered.

Burning the company's administration office is a way for them to record their intolerance and anger at a derisory GHC300 income at the end of the month.

Requiring a 10% increase, the strikers took over the business Monday morning and, in their anger, destroyed some property owned by the company.

Confiding the situation in Ghanaweb, the Bibiani District Commander, Superintendent Christopher Mpiani, revealed that the employees had burned two company vehicles, a Nissan Hardbody pickup truck and a Land Cruiser. He added that there were burnt tires and obstructions leading to the premises of the bauxite company.

According to him, his men were able to restore calm through discussions with the workers.

Although no injuries have been reported, Supr. Mpiani said that "five people have been arrested", adding that the police "ask the management to talk to his workers to resolve them as soon as possible".

The bauxite company's offices are still closed, but efforts to reach management and workers have proved futile.
