The National Identification Authority (NIA) has registered a total of 580 886 people since The Revised National Identification System (NIS) Project was launched on September 15, 2017.

Of the total number of registrations, about half, 233,741 did not have the prescribed documents and therefore had to be guaranteed, Graphic Online Reports from Caroline Boateng.

So far, 547,768 Ghanaians have been registered and received the card.

Some have been registered but have not yet received their cards.

Speaking at a press conference preceding a mbad registration and exercise of issuance of a Ghanaian map in the Greater Accra region from Monday, April 29, 2019 to Saturday, July 6, 2019, the director General ANI, Professor Ken Attafuah, has highlighted success of the SNI.

"I want to badure the people of this country that we have learned from the pilot phase and that, as a result, we have refined our technical systems and developed methods to ensure the operational success of the next exercise", a- he declared.

The Greater Accra region has been divided into two areas: Accra West and Accra East, where registration centers will be open at specific locations.

Pilot phase

The pilot phase, he explained, included testing the process of registering and issuing the Ghana map immediately to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on September 15, 2017.

The second phase involved the registration and issuance of cards to other personalities, including former presidents, on Monday, June 4, 2018.

A pilot recording was then carried out in selected institutions and communities such as the municipalities of Adentan, La Nkwantanang and Ga East in the Greater Accra region.

According to Professor Attafuah, the exercise has improved significantly and so far, 547,768 Ghanaians have been registered and received the card.

National Exercise

Attafuah said the exercise would be systematically extended to the rest of the country on a regional basis. He said that the registration and issuance of maps in the Volta and Oti regions would begin on July 25 and end on August 1, 2019.

The northern, savannah and northeastern regions will have their turn from August 13 to September 2, 2019.

That of the Haut-Est and Haut-Ouest regions will begin from September 12 to 29, 2019.

The fiscal year will continue in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo areas from October 10 to 30, 2019, while the West and North West Regions will begin November 11 to December 2, 2019.

The Ashanti region will have its turn from 19 December 2019 to 31 January 2020, while the exercise will be completed in the Eastern and Central regions from 12 February 2020 to 4 March 2020 and between 13 and 31 March 2020 , respectively.

According to the NIA, by the end of the fiscal year, about 85% of Ghanaians aged 15 and over would have been registered and equipped with dual interface smart cards for Ghana.

After national exercise, children under 15 will also be registered and will receive 2-D barcode cards from Ghana.

The registration exercise is open to Ghanaians with authentic birth certificates, valid pbadports and citizenship certificates.

The digital address code of Ghana Post is also part of the requirements.

A person without any of these documents could be guaranteed by a retired professional or official chief and other persons listed by the NIA.
