IMANI Africa Senior Vice President Kofi Bentil said Ghana would lose the $ 55 million lawsuit that Chinese company Beijing Everyway has filed against it in the International Arbitration Court.
Speaking on Newsfile, he said Ghana had wrongly violated the contract it had signed with the company that was to manage the Accra Smart Traffic Management project.
“The problem with this contract is not that it was canceled. It is that he was poorly rewarded and some people with open eyes did it in such a way that Ghana now has the responsibility and we are likely to face this debt of $ 55 million.
“It is my patriotic duty not to tell everyone that we will win, but to warn everyone and tell them that what we have done is wrong and that these people are likely to win. If they win, we will lose $ 55 million, ”said Bentil.
He said it would have been less annoying for him if the country had been slapped with the judgment case due to some errors and mistakes in the contract.
“I have seen warnings from the vice president’s office suggesting we shouldn’t be doing this. The Ministry of the Attorney General has warned that we should monitor this and many others.
“Even if we were to cancel this, I think we could have done it in a way that won’t make us obligated to pay $ 55 million,” Bentil added.
His comment comes after private company Beijing Everyway filed a lawsuit against the Government of Ghana at the International Court of Arbitration in London demanding $ 55 million from Ghana.
The Chinese company was hired to implement the Accra Smart Traffic Management project worth $ 100 million after parliamentary approval in 2018.
The company worked on the supply and installation of a traffic management system.
Upon verification of the nominations committee, the designated minister of roads and highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, admitted that his ministry had been served in the judgment case.
However, he failed to give details explaining that “since this legal step has been taken, I would not want to comment on this until the matter is resolved”.
Kofi Bentil told Samson Lardy Anyenini that Parliament can prevent the country from losing $ 55 million if it recalls the contract and corrects the mistakes it made.
He explained that the contract for the Accra intelligent traffic management project has not been completely wiped out.
However, a mistake was made when it was donated to another business when it was already under construction.
“I think Parliament can now do something to save this $ 55 million country.
“Anyone watching this arbitration knows that Ghana is going to lose, so we should really have a very serious view on this,” he added.
