Ghana hosts 4th World Teak Conference

Accra, July 26, GNA – Forestry Commission
was chosen to host the Fourth World Conference on Teak and deliberate on
challenges in teak production and marketing in emerging economies.

This is the first time the conference is
come to an African country as the three precedents have occurred in countries
Asia and Latin America.

The conference will also focus on
current state of knowledge and future challenges for sustainable development
development of the global teak sector in a changing world.

In this sense, the Forestry Commission
inaugurated a 13-member local organizing committee for the conference
scheduled to take place in Ghana from 24 to 27 August 2020.

The event is organized jointly by the
International Teak Information Network in collaboration with Forestry
Commission and the International Tropical Timber Organization, Japan, and Food
and the United Nations for Agriculture.

Inauguration of the Committee, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu
Afriya, the director of the Forestry Commission, urged the committee to:
develop a detailed strategy to make the conference a success.

He promised continued support and resources
for the committee, made up of members from academia, the private sector
and the government, to ensure the successful completion of the task.

Beyond Asia, Ghana has the largest area of
teak in the world.

Mr. John Allotey, Deputy Director General of
Committee on Forestry and Chair of the Committee, have committed themselves to prepare
members to project the image of Ghana on the world stage.

He expressed the gratitude of the members
the CEO for the trust they were given to work on the
Committee.

The Fourth World Teak Conference (WTC) takes place
theme: "Global teak market: challenges and opportunities for emerging countries
developing markets and economies. "

In Ghana, teak is about 70%
of all forest plantation species.

Part of the topic for discussion
are small teak plantations, value-added, marketing and livelihoods
enhancement of rural communities, tree improvement, genetics, silviculture and
stand management.
