Accra, May 31, GNA – Ghana joined Friday
the rest of the world to celebrate "No Tobacco Day" to raise awareness about
the dangers of tobacco smoke for lung health and the fundamental role of the lungs
played in the health and well-being of individuals.
The celebration on the theme "Tobacco and
Lung Health ", which also aimed to raise awareness of cost-effectiveness and feasibility
actions that key audiences, including governments and the public, could take to
reduce the risks to lung health posed by tobacco.

Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu's news agency said Ghana
made significant progress in reducing smoking by effectively strengthening
Complementary anti-smoking policies through the implementation of public policy
Health Act 2012 (Act 851) and the 2016 Tobacco Control Regulations (LI 2247).
He added that Ghana had recently introduced
pictorial health warnings on tobacco packaging
communicate the health risks badociated with tobacco use.

needlessly, and the costs of tobacco consumption for society continue to

69,200 women and 2700 boys who smoke cigarettes every day, killing about 75 men a day
week and making it a permanent threat to public health, "the statement said.
World No Tobacco Day was an opportunity
focus on raising awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use,
exposure to second-hand smoke and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form whatsoever,
the statement said.
Describing some facts about tobacco, the
statement said he killed one person every four seconds and with only one
breath, the hundreds of toxins contained in tobacco smoke begin to damage the lungs.
The statement noted that it was a
misconception that "Shisha" was not as bad as cigarettes because tobacco is
flavored and pbades through the water.
He explained that the volume of smoke
inhaled in a long hour shisha session was estimated at the equivalent of
smoke about 100 to 200 sticks of cigarette.
So he said, leaving as soon as
possible to prevent the onset of chronic lung disease, which was
potentially irreversible once it's developed.
According to the statement, Ghana was
committed to using anti-smoking provisions, including graphic health warnings
reduce the social acceptability of smoking, promote smoking cessation, help users to
stop and prevent initiation into smoking, especially among young people.
"That day, the Ministry of Health and its
Stakeholders appeal to all smokers to give up this habit and regain their
health. Individuals and communities are also encouraged to adapt healthily
lifestyles devoid of smoking and all forms of smoking. Do not leave the tobacco
take your health! Stop now for a good life!
