Takoradi, April 26
GNA – The Good Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
Project (GTVP), aimed at providing skills training to
craftsmen, workers and apprentices in the informal sector, has been
launched in Takoradi.
Trainees would be
equipped with modern technology and the skills needed to improve their business areas.
The GTVP, which started
in 2017, is a project under German-German-German cooperation for financial development,
financed by the German Development Bank KfW and implemented by the Council of
Technical and vocational education and training (COTVET).
It is also supported
PLANCO, an international consulting firm, nicknamed: "Skills: My
Future".
Mr. Kwabena Okyere
Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister, said the landscape of employment has changed
so that you have to be encouraged to start your own job after school,
unlike the past where jobs were easily accessible, pointing out that the world
belonged now to people belonging to the skill group.
He stressed that
the New Patriotic Party's philosophy of ownership owning democracy has revolved around
three pillars: freedom, excellent health care, education and training,
explaining that vocational training was the key to unlocking opportunities and
prosperity for all.
Mr. Darko-Mensah hinted
that his team was committed to pursuing any matter,
entrepreneurship and skills development because they fit directly into
business program of the Western Region.
He told the GVTP
The government's initiative is a good illustration of its commitment to education,
especially TVET, attractive and accessible to all Ghanaians.
He said that the government
firmly believed that TVET was going to be the driving force of the industry
and economic development.
Mr. Emmanuel Bekoe, the
Fund Manager for COTVET Ghana, urged the Western Region to adopt the
initiative because it was the "free form" of education for the informal world
sector".
Mr Collins Armah, Team
Responsible for COTVET Ghana, revealed that the project had existed since
recent years and trained about 5,000 people, 60% of whom
were women.
It would end here 2021
and about 16,000 people are targeted for training.
Mr. Armah badured
Ghanaians who, with the help of development partners, would be extended
beyond 2021 with an increased target of trainees.
"All this China
mainly vocational and technical training, which starts as early as
the basic level so if we want to develop as a country we have to follow their
not and that's exactly what this project is about, "he said.
Mr. Armah stated that
The COTVET certificate has been recognized and can be used to get a job in
many sectors.
Give a background to
the project, he said that it started three years ago in Greater Accra, Volta,
North and Ashanti, but has now expanded to the Eastern, Western and
Central regions.
GTVP provides
on-demand training vouchers for master craftsmen registered with COTVET,
their apprentices and workers.
The vouchers are used
to finance skills-based training courses in institutions accredited by COTVET and
badessment and certification of national competency levels I and II, which
would allow them to work off the coast of Ghana.
Commercial areas
The areas covered by the program are cosmetology, consumer electronics, automotive
repair, construction of buildings (welding) and garment making.
Plumbing, Furniture
manufacturing, electrical installation, laying of blocks, tiling, restoration and
Hospitality would be introduced later.
