Regionally, Ghana ranks 2nd in West Africa, overtaking Senegal, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire
Ghana was ranked 89th out of 110 countries in the third annual Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL).
The study which was conducted by a cybersecurity company, Surfshark, covers 90% of the world’s population and rates countries based on a set of five fundamental pillars of digital well-being.
“By joining the study for the first time, Ghana shows relatively poor results in terms of Internet accessibility (106th), Internet quality (99th), electronic infrastructure (99th), electronic security (78th) and electronic government (83rd). “
“Regionally, Ghana ranks 2nd in West Africa, overtaking Senegal, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria ranks first in the region, but Ghana surpasses the country in terms of internet accessibility and eGovernment. In addition, broadband internet is four times faster and twice as affordable in Ghana as in Nigeria. “
“However, Ghana still ranks at the bottom of the Internet Accessibility Index. Ghanaians have to work nearly 9 pm to afford the cheapest broadband Internet package, 3.5 more than the world average, ”the study notes.
He added that Ghana could improve in all areas of digital well-being, especially in electronic infrastructure, internet quality and affordability.
“Ghana has a similar GDP to Nigeria, but the quality of the internet in the two countries differs considerably. Nigeria ranks 46th in the pillar, while Ghana barely makes it into the top 100. The country ranks lower due to unstable mobile internet connectivity and low mobile internet speeds (14, 33 Mbps, ranking 104th out of 110 countries) ”, adds the report.
