• Ghana plans to vaccinate 20 million of its adult population by the end of 2021
Ghana received on Saturday, September 4, 2021 1,229,620 doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines donated by the United States government.
The shipment that has arrived at Kotoka International Airport will be the largest ever received by the Government of Ghana.
A tweet confirming the arrival of the shipment released by the Ministry of Information read: “The government today received the largest shipment of COVID-19 vaccines to date – 1.2 million doses.”
“As part of the #COVAX facility, this large donation of Moderna vaccines from the United States will increase the range of COVID-19 vaccines available and strengthen efforts to protect more people,” the tweet read.
The shipment which was due to arrive in the country on August 28 last week had to be delayed following an accident with the truck carrying the vaccines in West Virginia-USA.
He said the vaccines damaged by the accident had, however, been replaced and restocked.
The latest shipment, however, was received by health ministry officials after it landed in Ghana aboard a United Airlines Dreamliner extra-large plane.

So far, Ghana has inoculated over a million citizens with various vaccines with the goal of vaccinating 20 million of the adult population by the end of 2021.
Additionally, with the continued rise in COVID-19 and the limited number of vaccines produced globally, Ghana is expected to start producing vaccines locally soon.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 26th COVID-19 Update to the Nation announced the government’s plans to develop its capacity to locally produce COVID-19 vaccines with the aim of reducing reliance on foreign supplies.
Ghana was to have a national vaccine production institute, he said, to deal with the global coronavirus vaccine shortage that has stalled the country’s vaccination plans for some time.
In his remarks, the president said that the government will commit to injecting a seed fund of US $ 25 million for the establishment of the National Institute for Vaccine Production.
So far, three Ghanaian pharmaceutical companies have said they are ready to manufacture vaccines.
The move is part of a private initiative, DEK Vaccines Limited; the companies are Danadams, Ernest Chemists and Kinapharma.
