Sport Minister-designate Mustapha Ussif said Ghana will establish a new university dedicated to the development of sport after hosting the 2023 African Games.
The university, he said, will help improve the development of sport in Ghana and, by extension, in West Africa.

During his review by the Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, February 25, 2021, Ussif said that when Ghana won the bid to host the African Games, the government, through the ministry, decided that after the event, the infrastructure that will be put in place to host the event will be transformed into a university.

Mr. Ussif, who is also the new Patriotic Party (NPP) deputy for Yagaba-Kubori in the Northeast region, said the ministry will set up an Olympic village to host the event and that, the Olympic village will be transformed into a university for the development of sport.

“We are setting up a sub-committee to look at infrastructure development. We will set up, if the opportunity arises, an Olympic Village; and the Olympic Village will have facilities which, after the games, will serve as a university for sports development, ”he explained.

When asked if the establishment of the university was the plan of the ministry, Mr. Ussif replied in the affirmative, saying: “Yes, Mr. President, it is the plan of the ministry according to the briefings. that I have received ”.

He added that when President Akufo-Addo himself inaugurated the local organizing committee (LOC) for the games, he made a “categorical statement that after the games we will use the facilities to create a university for the games. development of sport; it will be the second sports university in all of Africa. “

Responding to what will become of Winneba Sports College then after the creation of the new University for Sports Development, he said: “It will be an entirely new facility that we are going to install for the games, but after the games we have to. using the facilities and government policy is that we will transform the facility into a university for the development of sport. “

He was of the opinion that the new university was important because there was not a university dedicated to sport in all of West Africa, saying “what we have now is a college in Winneba “.

Mr Ussif also hinted that Ghana is set to make progress at the 2023 African Games, saying: “We don’t just want to host the Africa Cup of Nations without winning medals, adding that” the government is committed to hosting the best African games in the country. “
