Ghana: UNIDO partnership to boost industrial development and boost export competitiveness

ACCRA, March 29, 2019 – The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), LI Yong, and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, signed the country program (CP) for Ghana, which will boost industrial development, trade and export competitiveness.

The country program, which is expected to be implemented from 2019 to 2022, will provide the frame of reference for UNIDO's technical cooperation activities with Ghana. The country program is aligned with the national development agenda, including the agenda of the Ghana Beyond Aid President, Ghana Vision 2020, and focuses on areas with high growth potential to achieve the goals of the country. sustainable development (SDG). In addition, the country program will help create synergies and help Ghana mobilize additional investment by facilitating the mobilization of partners and resources to achieve greater development impact.

In addition, LI Yong, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen and the EU Ambbadador to Ghana, HE Ms. Diana Acconcia signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the export competitiveness of the Ghanaian economy through production and sustainable transformation with high added value, low carbon emissions.

The agreement will build on recent EU support for competitiveness issues, capitalize on lessons learned and complement existing interventions in Ghana. The agreement is to be implemented within the framework of the West Africa Competitiveness Program (WACP), which aims to improve the performance and growth of certain value chains, notably cbadava, fruits (mangoes and pineapple), cosmetics and personal care products. These sectors correspond to the priorities of the Ghanaian government and have a high potential for industrialization and job creation.

The quadrennial program will run from 2019 to 2022 and will contribute to the development of value chains, improving the competitiveness of MSMEs, strengthening intermediary support organizations, creating better links between actors selected value chain and better access to regional and international markets.
