Iris Naa Norkor Akwetey
The Executive Director of the International Book Festival of Accra (AIBF) said that the transformation of Ghana can only be achieved by a population of readers.
In an interview Wednesday from her US base, Iris Naa Norkor Akwetey said that reading would change the attitudes of Ghanaians, improve their brains, build their self-confidence and reduce their stress levels.
These, she explained, are key ingredients for the survival and development of every country in the world.
"The power of reading can not be overestimated. He has helped many leaders succeed in business and life by transforming their thinking and turning them into a winning attitude. Our people must develop this habit in order to benefit from the dividend, "she said.
Who's running the campaign?
Although Ms. Akwetey did not rule out the government's role in leading this charge, she says parents are better placed to "spark that fire of reading".
She asked parents and guardians to instil a culture of reading and writing from the beginning into their children so that they could become high-performing students.
"We need to learn how to buy books for our children and encourage them to visit libraries scattered across the country. Do not leave the books to rats and badroaches, "she said, adding that" the best time to create a habit is when you're young. "
As part of the Accra International Book Festival, Ms Akwetey said the Festival provided Ghanaians and Africans with a forum to debate major issues facing the continent.
"The Book Festival is all about culture and the arts. To this end, we ensure that our speakers and our audience interact and learn from each other, "she said.
The 2018 Accra International Book Festival will be held October 24-27 at the University of Ghana.
