The reduction of rice imports the growth and consumption of local rice
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, plans are in place to reduce rice imports by at least 50% this year.
This aims to improve the growth and consumption of local rice in Ghana.
At present, Ghana imports $ 331 million worth of rice a year, which development actors have described as worrying.
George Oduro, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Citi Business News, said measures such as "planting for food and employment" as well as the new system of facilities for irrigated land should reduce by half the rice imports.
"This year alone, our goal is to stop rice imports by 50 percent, perhaps we could achieve that goal, if not more," he said.
He also added that tomato import is also being considered to reduce it quickly.
"Then tomatoes too, we try by the end of this year to stop the importation of tomatoes and, if possible, to export."
However, he called for a collaborative effort to achieve this feat.
"We are putting in place measures to stop these food imports because we are able to produce them here. But only if we meet to show interest. That's the only way to solve this problem, "he added.
