Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor believes that a woman occupying the country’s highest seat is inevitable.
According to him, time constraints would lead a woman to become president of the country. Her comments come as the world celebrates International Women’s Day with the theme “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid-19 World”.
The strong supporter of women’s empowerment spoke in an exclusive interview with Afia Kwarteng Asamani of Atinka News.
The former president explained that out of the three branches of government (executive, judicial, legislative), two have experienced female leadership and one has not yet succeeded in getting a woman to take leadership, but expressed l optimism that the possibility is high.
“We had two women as Chief Justice, one woman as Speaker of Parliament and recently a woman was a vice-candidate in the 2020 elections. It shows that women are bridging the gap and that in time the Ghanaian people would surrender. reckons that it is time to have a woman president. It’s not a rush, but time would offer this opportunity to women, ”he said.
The gender advocate does not believe in tokenism and therefore would not push for the agenda to give positions to just any woman, but women with the capacity and skills to do the job.
Mr. Kufuor praised the women for making good use of the opportunities the country has offered them by him and successive governments.
Commenting on the ministerial appointments of President Akufo-Addo, he strongly believed that the president will give a fair share to the country’s women, because that was his trademark. He called for support for the President in order to continually push women to reach higher heights.
He advised women to prioritize childcare in order to prepare children who would contribute significantly to the country’s development agenda.
