Black Cranes, of the National Weightlifting Team, won three medals at the African Senior Weightlifting Championship held in 2019 in Cairo, Egypt.

Athletes Winnifred Ntumi and Christian Amoah have made the country proud to strengthen Ghana's chances of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Ntumi competed in the women's 49kg weight category and climbed onto the podium to win the medal, having lifted 57kg in the rear and 67kg in clean and jerk to reach a total of 124kg on Thursday.

The 16-year-old said her next target would be the 2019 African Games, which should be held in Rabat, Morocco, in August, adding that she would use the experience gained to perform better at the meeting in Rabat.

For his part, Christian Amoah, Olympian Rio 2016, raised 148 kg for the snatch, 172 kg for cleaning and throwing, for a total of 320 kg, but was rewarded for the ripped and total.

Amoah won two bronze medals in the men's 89kg category. He was rewarded in Snatch and Total at the end of his competition. He weighed 148 kg for the snatch, 172 kg for Clean and Jerk and 320 kg for the total.

Amoah, competing to represent Ghana at the upcoming Olympic Games, thanked Ghanaians and the government for their support during their participation in the competition.

He added, however, that there were about five other competitions before qualifying for the Olympic Games and therefore called on the government and other stakeholders to support the team.

Ghana was represented by six athletes, including Sandra Mensimah Owusu, fifth in the ranking of 10 athletes in the women's 59kg weight category. She weighed 66 kg to snatch, 80 kg to the clean-jerk for a total of 126 kg.

David Akwei also finished seventh out of nine athletes in the men's 67 kg after taking 104 kg to snatch, 130 kg for clean jets and 234 kg while Jeremiah Teng-Gbul Benye also finished eighth out of 11 athletes at the 81 kg male to 119 kg to clean and jerk and 259 for the total.

Christopher Forrester Osei, on the other hand, was fourth on eight athletes in the men's 96kg. He weighed 151 kg to snatch, 180 kg to the clean-and-throws for a total of 331 kg.

The national team is expected to arrive in the country from Cairo on Tuesday.
