The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Military Academy and Training Schools School of Education (MATS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Winneba University of Education (UEW) last Tuesday. .
The MOU, which is primarily intended to provide a platform for staff to develop academically, will also provide similar opportunities to civilians in their catchment area.
This commitment is expected to improve the efficiency, competence and professional capacities of staff, especially after their retirement.
Agreement
Speaking to the media, the director general for training at the Burma camp headquarters Brigadier General Twum Ampofo-Gyekye, who signed the memorandum of understanding on behalf of the GAF, said the two institutions were in talks for some time. and believed it was time to formalize the deal.
“We are looking to acquire knowledge and develop our staff. Discussions have been going on for some time now, so today we have come to formalize the partnership between the GAF and UEW. We know the caliber of the UEW school locally and internationally, so we seek to harness their potential to improve ourselves, ”Brigadier General Ampofo-Gyekye said.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the partnership agreement, the Commander of the School of Education (MATS), Major Hilda Asiedu, said that the GAF took several factors into account before choosing UEW for the partnership. .
She explained that MATS, as a training command, and the GAF Education Unit School of Education reviewed the wide range of courses offered by the university and also took into account the number of teachers within the unit, after which he decided that UEW would be the best choice since it is recognized as a leader in the field of higher education for teachers.
“We looked at the courses that are being given and we also saw ourselves as an educational unit and the fact that we have a lot of teachers within our unit. This university is the place where teachers come to develop their skills and so we thought that with the other courses offered by this university, this would be the ideal university for us to join.
“It’s not that other universities were not taken into account, but we felt that for our purposes, Winneba would best serve our purpose,” she said.
Tuition fees
Major Hilda Asiedu said the military has made an agreement with the university to have some selected staff who have enrolled in various programs have part of their fees waived.
She said the unit had a process by which it would select students who deserve the waiver and added that others who register may be required to pay their fees.
Terms & Conditions
According to Major Hilda Asiedu, the agreement allowed all military personnel to enroll in any program at the university.
“This partnership is open to all GAF personnel and open to civilians living in our catchment area. We are not only looking to provide education to the staff or personnel of the Ghanaian Armed Forces, but we are also looking to the community in which we are hosted and to provide education to all who are interested, ”she explained.

For his part, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, the Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, revealed that the university had decided not to affiliate with any other institution to allow it to focus on its many distance learning centers as it only had 40 institutions with which it is affiliated in the world.
He revealed that the university had to reconsider the decision due to compelling reasons given by the GAF for the partnership.
The Vice-Chancellor described the GAF’s decision to partner with UEW as heartwarming, given that there are several reputable institutions with which the military could have decided to partner.
“It is very heartwarming that an institution such as the Ghanaian Armed Forces, which is widely respected around the world, has seen similar values in our university to theirs. The Ghanaian armed forces definitely have a mandate to serve humanity and they have done so very well over the years in the many activities protecting lives and property all over the world in peacekeeping areas, between others, ”he said.

The Vice Chancellor expressed his gratitude to the Chief of Defense Staff and all senior GAF officers for the partnership and assured that the university would do its best to fulfill its part of the deal.
“On behalf of the University, I would like to express our gratitude and respect to the Chief of the Defense Staff for the kind words spoken and the serious gestures towards the partnership. I can only assure you that we will continue to be the right partner, ”he said.
Other officers present at the signing ceremony were Lieutenant-Colonel Michelle Yaw Borbi, Deputy Director, Training, Headquarters, Burma Camp; Lt Abel Nartey, Lt Israel Nyako, Mr. Laud Hammond, Mr. Emmanuel Boye and Mr. Godsway Kporgbe, all instructors at the School of Education MATS, Teshie in Accra.
