The Ghanaian Armed Forces (GAF) have opened investigations into reports that some of its members have protected illegal miners degrading the Manso forest in the Ashanti region.
In a press release signed by the director of public relations, Col. Aggrey-Quashie, GAF stressed that it does not take the allegations lightly, nor condone wrongdoing, if they are found to be true.
“As a result, a full investigation has been opened into the allegations and appropriate penalties will be imposed on anyone found guilty.”
It comes after the Luv News team obtained evidence of more than 30 fully armed servicemen protecting illegal miners – whose activities have degraded Manso Forest – despite the withdrawal of all military personnel from mining sites across the country. country.
The men, presumed to be with the military because of their uniforms, practically argued with the task force and the press team, which damaged the windshield and rearview mirror of Luv FM’s vehicle.
“From what we see here, it looks like soldiers are involved in all this activity in this forest, because looking at their uniforms, some have names.
“Looking at this, I think the military were the people protecting them here to do this illegal work,” said one of the members of the Environmental Sustainability Task Force.
Seven Chinese nationals stationed at the mine site who were arrested by the task force were later released by the men in military uniform.
The armed forces, however, assured “the general public of its unwavering commitment to the national cause”.
