A man was sentenced to three years in prison for failing to cooperate with United States authorities in his expulsion from the country. According to the Pennsylvania Middle District District Court, Patrick Owusu, a Ghanaian, has made every effort to prevent his removal from the United States.

A statement from the US State Department of Justice in 2012 stated that Owusu should be returned to Ghana after being "convicted of several serious criminal offenses while residing in the United States."

On two occasions – March 31, 2014 and May 28, 2014, Owusu refused to board a plane for his home country, Ghana. Immigration agents tried to take him out of the United States, but that turned out to be futile.

Owusu has since been detained, but must be returned to Ghana as a result of this sentence. The case was investigated by immigration and customs officials. The case was continued by US Deputy Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo. According to indications dating as far back as 2017, 7,000 Ghanaians would be threatened with deportation.

The US ambbadador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson, said the 7,000 people were guilty of various immigration offenses and had violated the terms of their visa. At the time, he said that Ghanaians were at different stages of the deportation process.

But the government said it did not want to rush the process and wanted a thorough control of the said deportees.

Ghana is currently fighting with visa penalties imposed by the United States for its alleged lack of cooperation in accepting expelled Ghanaians.
