Ghanaian students excel in mathematics, science

– The South African Diploma Examinations in West Africa (WASSCE) 2019 have seen a marked improvement in the number of successful candidates in basic and integrated science courses.

A large number of students excelled in mathematics (core) and integrated science during the West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) of 2019.

This is in line with the West African Examination Council (WAEC) statistics on the different topics.

WAEC reported that 65.31% of candidates who pbaded this year's exams had between A1 and C6 in the mathematics article.

In addition, 50.52% of the candidates who pbaded the exams had between A1 and C6 in integrated sciences.

A statement from WAEC said:(Basic) mathematics recorded the most significant improvement from A1 to C6 compared to 2018 (38.33% to 65.31%).

"In addition, integrated science has improved significantly (50.52% to 63.17%), with the English language showing a slight improvement from 46.91% to 48.96%. Social studies also showed a slight improvement in candidate performance (73.27% to 75.43%)."

A total of 346,094 candidates participated in exams across the country, the Council said. This figure is 9.2% higher than the 2018 candidacy, which was 316,999.

At the same time, the Council indicated that, although preliminary results for study candidates have been published, others have not been released.

The review body stated that the results of 48,855 students had been disclosed because of various cases of misconduct.

Some candidates allegedly brought foreign documents, such as prepared notes, printed matter and mobile phones, into the examination room, and allegedly plotted some supervisors to scam them.

WAEC further stated that "the provisional results indicate that there have been improvements in the performance of candidates from A1 to C6 in all major subjects".

Council added: "Candidates should note that all WAEC results are secure and can be authenticated. People whose results are counterfeit will be exposed. "
