United Progressive Party (UPP) founder Akwasi Addai Odike predicted the fate of Ghanaian youth if the 1992 Constitution is not revised to make changes.
The former president, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings after a successful coup formed a Constituent Assembly to draft and enact the 1992 constitution to aid the practice of democratic governance in Ghana.
According to Akwasi Addai Odike, the former head of state forced members of the Constituent Assembly to give the presidency wide prerogative powers so that he could fully rule Ghana.
Talk to Onua FM, the founder of the UPP said the 1992 constitution is designed to protect the executive branch of government from strict investigation and prosecution, even after it has diverted government resources.
Akwasi Addai Odike, while lamenting the inability of past government administrations to revise constitutions, notes that this is sure to impoverish Ghanaian youth.
“The 1992 constitution has no hope or future for young people; if parts are not changed or revised, young people would remain poorer and miserable no matter who becomes the next president, ”the Ghanaian politician said.
Akwasi Addai Odike insists that it is high time that the prerogative powers that allow the president to appoint the Auditor General, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other relevant positions are repealed.
He believes that once that is done, it would make the members of the executive accountable to the people.
