Some Ghanaians have expressed blatant disgust at a racist-inspired report by Sky News in the UK on the arrival of the first batch of coronavirus vaccine in the country.
Ghana grabbed local and international headlines after becoming the first African country to receive coronavirus vaccines from the COVID-19 Vaccines Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC) facility.
The development comes after Ghana’s health ministry, in the early hours of Wednesday February 24, 2021, took delivery of some 600,000 doses of vaccine.
However, the Sky News report in the UK specifically invoked the anger of Ghanaians after the website in a tweet described Ghana as “the poorest people in the world”
In a tweet, Skynews said: “A flight carrying 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine has arrived in Ghana as part of a global effort to immunize the world’s poorest people”
Some Ghanaians used the microblogging site to label the comment as racist.
Award-winning reporter Anny Osabutey said, “Dear @SkyNews, I blvu cu cu found a respectful way to report that Gh received the first batch of vaccine, instead of what I call a ‘racist’ story. Yes, our government can ask you for help, but that doesn’t mean the UK hasn’t benefited from us. “
Another user by the name of Uncle Obed has said that the digital racism perpetuated by foreign media is something we don’t ‘get mad’ enough about.
