Ghanaians invited to revive the spirit of volunteerism

Accra, April 27, GNA –
Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Prime Minister, urged Ghanaians to revive the spirit
volunteering to realize the "Ghana Beyond Aid" dream.

"Volunteering and
working with others to meet the challenges of our communities is essential
our development as a people, "he noted.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo was
at the 6th Rotary International District 9102 Conference,
Rotarians from Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger and Kenya in Accra.

The conference would
evaluate and share experiences on how to improve their humanitarian services
in their various communities.

He explained that
Ghana Beyond Aid did not mean that Ghana was not in need and would not need help
but to manage its resources well.

"As a country, we are
anxious to become a prosperous and self-sustaining nation by better
manage our resources instead of having a mindset of depending on the help and
kindness of others, "he said.

It also meant that
Ghanaians should speed up their own development, refrain from importing and
add value to available raw materials.

The main minister
stated that Ghana had no reason to be where it was and should provide badistance to
developing countries and the judicious use of resources
availability was essential.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo said:
If Ghana had 50% citizens with rotarian hearts and minds, the
country would change for the better.

Rotary, he says
existed to mobilize resources for the purpose of empowering the poor and
respond to national concerns, claiming that life had been transformed by the
benevolence of its members.

He quoted this Rotary
had improved the cleanliness in the city of Accra by proving that the wastebaskets
complement the government's efforts to rid the city of dirt, which has become a
challenge.

The main minister
congratulated the club for its services such as peace and conflict prevention and
resolution, prevention and treatment of diseases, improvement of water and sanitation,
maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, as well as
economic and community development which, he said, corresponded perfectly to the
government programs.

He has then
encouraged Ghanaians to follow their example in carrying out the Ghana Beyond Aid program
dream that Ghana would not continue to depend on foreign aid.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo was
pleased that Ghana has not registered any cases of polio for ten years and
expressed the hope that the gains would be maintained and that Africa would be
declared polio free.

He called the club
accelerate the establishment of the Kofi Annan peacekeeping training center
confirmed as being the Rotary Center for Peace, which, if it were finally done, would be the
seventh of these centers of peace in the world and the first in Africa.

In a speech to read
Mr. Barry Rbadin, President of Rotary Club International, said on his behalf that the

hero, you are the ones who bring change and that is the new face of
Rotary in Africa, "he noted.

Mr. Jeffrey Afful, the
District Governor, giving the state of the club, said that he had organized
12,300 Interact Clubs in 133 Countries and the Rotary Community Corps (RCC)
7,500 RCCs in 80 countries.

Rotaract had also
organized clubs to promote leadership, professional development and service
in young adults as well as.
