Former Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo said Ghana’s leaders must move beyond rhetoric in its fight against corruption.
Speaking at a town hall organized by the Catholic Professionals Guild on “Tackling the Corruption Virus in Our Country: My Commitment as a Christian Professional,” Mr. Domelevo said: “A good number of Ghanaians would like to see more action against corruption, other than rhetoric ”.
“Unfortunately, the leaders of the country are very good at rhetoric,” he observed, adding, “In my humble opinion, public funds are only saved when you have an efficient administration with efficient procurement systems. public accountancy “
He said that while the digitization campaign led by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is useful, it will come to naught if corruption is not tackled head-on.
“I appreciate the efforts of the Vice President on the digitization of the public sector. I congratulate him, except to say that if we do not curb indiscipline, digitization will not provide the desired solution.
Just days ago, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said Acting Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu did what his predecessor Domelevo failed to achieve during his tenure.
Mr. Akuamoah Asiedu has served as GA since August 2020 after Mr. Domelevo was invited by President Akufo-Addo to take his 167 days of accumulated annual leave and then retired by the President.
Speaking in a meeting with members of the Ghana National Anti-Corruption Coalition at Jubilee House, Mr. Akufo-Addo said: “The Acting Auditor General has demonstrated a quality and sufficient independence of view ”.
For example, underlined the president, Mr. Akuamoah Asiedu “is responsible for certain things which one has never heard of”.
“In our history, the 12 statutory reports that must be compiled and submitted to Parliament in the Year of Parliament, this is the first time this has been done,” said the President.
“Even the most vaunted Auditor General before him has never succeeded in doing it and he did,” Mr. Akufo-Addo contrasted.
“I think based on the work he did, the independence with which he went around his work, if today efforts are made to confirm it, I think it should be done, and this confirmation process will gather more public support, ”he added.
