Railway Development Minister Joe Ghartey refuted claims that the country's current planning system would not support modern airliner infrastructure.

He added that experts believe that the infrastructure of air trains is the most economical and easiest compared to other rail infrastructure.

"The thing [is] that inside the city of Accra, it will be difficult to make a subway, for various reasons, the median alone is another option. The sky is the easiest because it is enough to lift pillars and the train pbades above the ground. Experts say it's the simplest and most economical solution, "he said.

Mr. Ghartey added that the experts were of the opinion that, as Ghana was not properly planned, the air train was better for the country.

"We are not on the ground, we are above the ground and we are not in anyone's space. Because our cities are not well planned, we can not do metro lines, which is very expensive. For the air train, we are told that it can cost about $ 10 million per kilometer, which is cheaper than other rail infrastructure, "he said.

The minister added that the Ministry of Railway Development will not finance the airlift project, but that it will be based on BOT (build-operation-transfer) financing.

"We do not put our money into the airlift project; we do it by bot. The Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund invested in this project as a lead investor.

"They are doing a feasibility study after they finish, they will present their proposal and I bring it to the cabinet, if that is enough we will do it and if it is not good we will not do it. not."

SKY TRAIN PROJECT

In November 2018, the government signed an agreement with a South African group, Africa Investment (Ai) SkyTrain Consortium, for the construction of a $ 3 billion Accra airlift project.

The project would be rolled out in phases, the first covering 256 km at a cost of $ 1.2 billion.

The airlift project is expected to address the growing congestion problem in Accra and boost economic activity in the capital, Accra, while combating pollution.

The memorandum of understanding is expected to last nine months and allow (Ai SkyTrain consortium) to conduct a feasibility study in more detail, after which concession agreements will be presented to the firm for approval.

If approved, construction will start in January 2020.
