Ghana's water warns communities in Weija before spilling a dam … | General news

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) announced that it would start dumping excess water from the Weija Dam by the end of the week as part of the routine measures aimed at to protect the dam.

Owners and residents of downstream communities were therefore asked to evacuate the area to prevent any eventuality.

The communities likely to be affected are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Weija Lower, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, Tsokome and the surrounding communities.

The announcement was contained in a press release signed yesterday by GWCL Public Relations Director Stanley Martey.

Excess water

The company explained that the increase in water levels of the dam was due to rains.

He added that the current level of the dam was 46.6 feet and the safety level of the dam was 47 feet.

"With the onset of the rains, the water level is rising and is approaching the 47-foot safety level. Like all dams, its safe levels of operation are maintained to prevent possible collapse, "he said.

The statement added that opening the gates of the spillway could cause flooding and that it was for this reason that the company was calling on residents for them to evacuate the area.

Sensitization

According to the company, she had launched a door-to-door outreach program to inform the public about the exercise.

"Opinion leaders, leaders, MPs, unit committee leaders and heads of institutions were all informed of the exercise.

"GWCL is also liaising with National Security to flush the estuary to allow for an easy flow of water into the sea," he added.
