Former Nissan president Carlos Ghosn left Thursday for the second time his detention center. He was released on bail of 500 million yen after agreeing not to contact his wife while he is awaiting trial for financial misconduct.
After a Tokyo court dismissed an appeal by prosecutors against his release, Mr. Ghosn left the Tokyo detention center around 22:22, wearing a dark suit and a shirt. white without a tie, said a witness at the Reuters news agency.
Toyota Alphard van was waiting for dozens of journalists, TV operators and photographers who had been waiting in front of the detention center since morning to get a glimpse of the former leader after his last three weeks of detention.
The second bail of Mr Ghosn in three months is the latest turning point in a financial scandal that shook the global automotive industry and revealed tensions in the partnership between Nissan and the French group Renault SA in the automotive sector.
On his last release, the former officer exchanged his usual suit and chauffeur-driven sedan against the disguise of a workman's uniform, glbades and mask, in order to pbad next to the reporters before being taken away in a compact van.
The latest charge against Ghosn relates to the $ 5 million US enrichment for Nissan. Since his first arrest in November, Ghosn has also been accused of temporarily transferring personal financial losses into his employer's books and underestimating his salary while he was at the helm. from Japan's second automaker.
He denied all the charges against him.
"I maintain my innocence and I am determined to vigorously defend myself against these unfounded and unfounded accusations," Ghosn said in a statement following his release.
According to a defense lawyer, a court in Tokyo demanded that Mr. Ghosn not be able to meet or otherwise contact his wife Carole without Thursday's prior authorization.
Carole Ghosn criticized the treatment Japanese prosecutors inflicted on her husband and herself when they arrested Ghosn again in their small apartment in Tokyo earlier this month under the pretext of abuse. of aggravated confidence.
Following the last arrest of her husband, on April 4, she went to Paris to appeal to the French government to help her obtain the release of Ghosn while awaiting his trial. She was interrogated by the authorities when she returned to Tokyo.
"Restricting communications and contacts between my wife and me is cruel and unnecessary," Ghosn said in a statement. "We love each other very much, she answered all the questions of prosecutors in court and she did nothing wrong."
In addition to restricted access to his wife, Ghosn's movements and communications will be closely monitored and restricted to prevent him from fleeing the country and tampering with evidence, the Tokyo District Court said.
Earlier in the day, the court announced in a statement that it had approved a request for bail from Mr. Ghosn's defense and set a bond of 500 million yen, about half of his previous bail. One billion yen.
He was released in March, but was arrested again earlier this month on new charges, before returning to the detention center where he had spent 108 days after his first arrest.
In the latest charge, prosecutors allege that two separate payments of $ 5 million were made to the account of a Nissan subsidiary on behalf of a foreign dealer. A total of $ 5 million was then transferred from the dealer's account to another account in which Ghosn had an interest.
Ghosn said he was a victim of a coup in the council hall, accusing former Nissan colleagues of "stabbing", describing them as selfish rivals determined to derail an alliance closer between the Japanese manufacturer and its main shareholder, Renault.
