There has been a lot of concern around the approach ghost hunters– as at all in a conversation – in recent years. As you may remember, director Paul Feig attempted to update the original movie with a remake featuring four hilarious women in 2016. Internet – or at least vocal and virulent voices, provoked by a misogynistic scandal – did not take it well. As a result, Sony has accelerated a more traditional procedure Ghostbusters 3, directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the original director. Nevertheless, while Jason Reitman makes known his intention to please the "fans", different neighborhoods of the internet also seem quite dissatisfied.
The news comes from Reitman who appears in the last episode of Bill Burr's Podcast Monday morning. Discussing his new project, which follows a variety of highly nominated and Oscar-nominated works, including Juno and In the air, Reitman attempted to suggest that his film would be a love letter to the 1984 original comedy ghost hunters, directed by his father Ivan Reitman, and not his usual independent film.
"I'm not doing Juno of ghost hunters movies, "Reitman told the podcast." We are trying in any case to go back to the original technique and make the film to the fans. This immediate reaction comes from a place of justified frustration: long before Paul Feig 2016 ghost hunters was released, the level of badual and vitriolic malice referred to in the photo and its cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones was so toxic that putting the film's title above one article led to a fiasco in the film comment section. Eventually, Leslie Jones left Twitter due to personal attacks aimed at making her appear in the movie. Some consider Reitman's comments as at best a submission to such toxicity.
However, it should be noted that when Reitman speaks of "fans", he is included as such. In the same podcast interview, he presents himself as "the first ghost hunters fan, "having had an early glimpse of his father's film on the set during his childhood. And honestly, it's easy to understand what he means without turning the comment into a pseudo-dog-whistle for the right-hander. ghost hunters (2016) was unfortunately a disappointment at the box office. Out of a budget of nearly $ 150 million, it has generated less than $ 230 million worldwide. A noisy subsection of Reddit or Twitter did not lead the public to reject this film; It has not attracted a wide range of fans of the two original films and has not created as many fans as the younger generations to justify its price, let alone that of a suite.
Sony has chosen to return to the style of narration in search of nostalgic suites. Cynical? Yes, but given the success of other franchises that have created historical suites in which new generations are discovering the so-called wonder of the past (for example, Star Wars: The awakening of strength, Creed, or Jurbadic World), he is careful. Reitman, we hope, comes from a place of sincerity when he talks about his love for the original films and, in a typical public relations logic, he tries to convey that love for him. 39; old in his new movie – hopefully even if he updates it. for a more politicized audience, as we see with Star wars evolved while providing a fan service. It is possible, or even likely, that in Reitman's attempt to suggest that this film will be more popular with more fans than the 2016 film, it did not mean that He spoke squarely to those who breathe in the mouth and who escaped Jones' social act. media, although the franchise model of Ghostbusters 3 is designed to bring them into the tent too. It is possible to be a fan of the original film and, in good faith, not to worry about the remake of 2016 (I did not do it, much to my disappointment, because I wanted to silence the worst elements of our fans). Yet … these comments have not done any favor to Reitman or his movie this week.
