The Ghana Health Service (GHS) Health Promotion Division has launched a series of Covid-19 prevention and awareness campaigns in key markets and hot spots in the Greater Accra region.

The campaign, on the theme “the mask is a must”, consists in raising awareness among the population of hotspot areas.

It targets a population of around three thousand people, including women traders, trotter drivers, street vendors and various workplaces.

The objective is to educate the target population on the causes, mode of transmission, symptoms and preventive protocols of Covid-19.

Campaign activities are mapped in close coordination with various associations of market women, leaders of various transport unions and leaders of various truck fleets, vendors and market bosses.

Around 4,000 communication materials for social and behavioral change, including posters and brochures on Covid-19, have been distributed.

Around 2,000 reusable masks were also distributed to people without a mask.

“The recent resurgence of the virus around the world has increased the challenge for WHO and health authorities and until a treatment or vaccine is introduced in Ghana, we must continue to work together to control the spread of the virus and raise awareness in the community about the importance of wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance and practicing good hand hygiene, ”said Dr DaCosta Aboagye, director of the division.

“We urge every Ghanaian to follow these basic health promotion measures to protect themselves and their families from this disease in order to resume normal activities of our daily life,” added Dr Da Costa.

The leaders of the various groups, transport unions, traders, drivers and okada motorcyclists expressed their joy and thanked the Service for its foresight.
They called for regular sensitization and the application of protocols.
