Chelsea deputy director Gianfranco Zola said the club had offered young Ghanaian Callum Hudson-Odoi more first-team opportunities than other 18-year-old Europeans.

The 56-year-old Italian rejected claims that coaching staff at Chelsea should do more to make Callum Hudson-Odoi feel appreciated within the club.

Hudson-Odoi, 18, has not yet made his Premier League debut for the London club and was limited to six minutes of the bench in the Europa League win at Malmo on Thursday.

In January, Bayern Munich had failed with a £ 35 million offer for the winger, who had also been denied a transfer request, but Zola rejected accusations that Chelsea coaching staff should do more to give him the feeling of being appreciated.

"You have to understand that he's surrounded by top players and that you have to work hard to be better than them," Gianfranco Zola on Callum Hudson-Odoi

"Sorry but I do not agree with that," said Zola. "He is always at the forefront of the team.

"As soon as he has an opportunity to play, sometimes from the beginning, the manager gives him many reasons to feel involved and wanted.

"There are not a lot of 18-year-old players in the top European clubs that play as much as he does, and he is a player we appreciate and believe in growing up.

Hudson-Odoi made his 13th appearance of the season in Chelsea's victory at Malmo

"He has a bright future in this club. All members of the coaching group like him.You must understand that he is surrounded by top players and that you have to work hard to be better than you." ;them.

"That's what we want from him, to make sure he continues to improve, because he can do better."
