GIFEC, Library Partner, Kofi Annan ICT Center on Digitization

Accra, April 15, GNA – The Management of Ghana
Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, has signed a memorandum of
Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) and the
Ghana-India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence (AITI-KACE) in ICT
government digitization program.

The partnership consists of establishing guidelines and
firm agreements between the two parties and specify the specific roles and
responsibilities.

Mr. Kofi Asante, Director of GIFEC,
at the signing ceremony, said the new five-year strategic plan of the Fund
management for 2019-2022 demanded that they forge effective and efficient
collaborations.

He said that it was to ensure continuous research
to find innovations in the ICT landscape and to facilitate the generalization
ICT awareness and literacy in unserved and underserved communities.

He said that GIFEC had established a long
partnership with GhLA, which involved the provision of IT equipment and
Internet connectivity to regional, district and mobile libraries across the
country.

Mr. Asante stated as part of the collaboration:
ICT centers would be set up in the library's premises to promote affordable ICTs
for the socio-economic development of Ghana and avoid duplication of resources for
achieve similar end goals.

The Administrator stated in 2012, under the
Library Connectivity Project, GIFEC provided desktop computers to
Authority's mobile vehicle to help communities access computers for experimentation
learning.

He said he was following up on his promise to
ushering in a new era of growth, redesign of library and delivery services
optimization to mean rebirth after years of stagnation, mobile vans
were now a state-of-the-art mechanism for the provision of library services and were
ready to resume operations.

"GIFEC provided the Authority with 100 laptops
computers to support the project in this new era, "he added.

He said that GIFEC was in collaboration with AITI-
KACE will provide the results of the research sponsored by GIFEC and innovations from
products and services to badist the Fund in fulfilling its mandate and providing
ICTs for socio-economic development in Ghana.

Mr. Asante indicated, as a preliminary activity, that
parties would conduct a strategic planning exercise to review the process
AITIKACE operations in Bolgatanga and Sunyani.

He stated that the collaboration between GIFEC / GhLA
and AITI-KACE would allow Ghana to keep pace with the digital eruptions that
in the technological era of today.

"It will facilitate the achievement of GIFEC objectives
mandate to improve ICT infrastructure in disadvantaged communities and to
ICT literacy for all people, especially people with disabilities and
marginalized in the era of information, "he said.

Mr. Hayford Siaw, Acting Executive
Director, GhLA, said that the Authority had declared 2019 year of reading and
