The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has accepted the government's proposal to merge the Institute with two other institutions.
This was announced by the rector, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, who indicated that the GIJ was in principle in agreement with the project of merger of the three institutes proposed by the government.
He made it known at 13th Congregation Ceremony of the Institute coincides with its 60th Anniversary celebrated since the creation of the GIJ in 1959.
In his words, Professor Kwansah-Aidoo explicitly stated; "We do not disagree with the merger in principle!"
The rector pointed out that the institute provided immeasurable possibilities with the project of merger of the GIJ, the National Institute of Film and Television (NAFTI) and the Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL ).
He said: "We see significant opportunities to take advantage of the synergies offered by the different institutes.
Professor Kwansah-Aidoo, in this regard, suggested that the GIJ was preparing for such a merger. "We are preparing to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges that will arise from the proposed merger.
We "seek to play a crucial leadership role in improving program management, teaching and research effectiveness in the new university, while expanding the unique offerings of the GJI to meet needs of all our members, "he said.
When presenting his report to the congregation ceremony, the president also revealed that the Institute had launched a student support program to help students in financial difficulty.
He said: "A management initiative that. The GIJ Board recently approved the GIJFund Scholarship, "explaining that it is supposed to help cover tuition fees for amazing undergraduates who are facing a demonstrable financial challenge.
The scholarship program is expected to come into effect in the 2019/2020 academic year, which begins in September 2019.
The event that was held at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on Saturday, July 27, 2019 brought together 1,290 students from the Institute, including 821 graduate students and 469 graduate students .
The ceremony was honored by Cameron Doudu, journalist, novelist, columnist and guest moderator, who was the guest of honor, representatives of the government and sister institutions, staff of the GIJ, as well as family and friends of graduates.
