The management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) reconsidered its earlier decision not to allow institute students who had paid their tuition fees late to participate in future exams.
Management had announced earlier that late enrolled students would have to postpone their classes to the next academic year but has since granted them a pardon following student unrest.
“The management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism magnanimously granted all students who had not enrolled in the first semester of the 2020/2021 academic year the opportunity to enroll and take their end-of-semester exams instead. to defer their programs, ”the school said in a statement.
According to the statement, the decision was made on Thursday, March 25, 2021, after receiving a petition from student leaders who also offered a wholehearted apology on behalf of the student body for launching a protest.
“We would like to point out that management has been constantly engaged with students on the payment of fees and registration since 2018, when the students embarked on a demonstration on a similar issue.”
“Since then, management has continuously sent out notices to students and extended registration deadlines without penalty, and offered students with difficulties the opportunity to use the institution’s processes to resolve their issues in order to allow to register.
The pardon, according to management, will expire in 5 working days and students should take advantage of the new window to finalize their registration in order to take the exams that were postponed to April 6, 2021.
“The management listened to the students’ pleas and accepted the apologies presented by the students in good faith. The leadership therefore grants a general amnesty to all students to complete their registration. Affected students should immediately file their receipts with the Academic Affairs Register to complete the enrollment process. This possibility to register will expire in five (5) working days from today, Thursday April 1, 2021. Any other student who has a special case must contact the registrar’s office to take advantage of any available opportunity to students with exceptional circumstances or difficulties. As a result, the exams which were to start on Monday March 29, 2021 are postponed to Tuesday April 6, 2021. The Academic Affairs Register will publish a new exam schedule in due course ”.
GIJ had previously in a notice enjoined all students who had paid their registration fees after the registration deadline to postpone the academic year.
This directive angered the students of the institute who led to a demonstration on the school premises on Wednesday, March 25, 2021.
The school, in its latest statement, condemned the demonstration organized by the students calling it unfortunate.
